At first, my project began as a simple idea to communicate with those in assisted living facilities during the new age of COVID-19. Then I began researching. “There is a 29% increase in the risk of developing heart disease and a 32% risk of stroke in those with poor social relationships. Social isolation significantly increased a person’s risk of premature death from all causes” (Loneliness, 2020). Now statistics like these drive my project. I want to help these older adults have some fun while extending their lifespan by socializing with them. Because of COVID, we can’t do any activities in person of the sort, so I took it virtual. I do zoom meetings with senior citizens once a week where we read a book of their choice. I am also looking to expand this project with more citizens to make it a one on one project where we write handwritten letters with these senior citizens.
